Emmie Liebregts is a Dutch artist currently living in Breda.
Her work has been exhibited at various venues, including Galerie Bart, Kromhouthal, Gashouder and CODA Museum. In 2021 she was nominated for the Jan Naaijkens Prize, she was selected for the talent development trajectory Inversie in 2022 and in 2023 she received the Mondrian Start stipend. In 2024 she was selected by Goethe Institute and the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo for a research residency in Kyoto.
@emmieliebregtsEmotions, stress and trauma can keep a tight grip on your insides. Just as love goes through the stomach according to some, grief can completely tangle your intestines. The work of Emmie Liebregts (b. 1996) has a common thread: the private sphere and the physical in relation to the mental. Previously, the artist often deployed her own body - through performances, for example - to explore and represent psychosomatics. Recently, she is turning her practice toward a more research-oriented approach with a focus on the history of psychosomatics within psychology.
She works with contrasting materials, from a fleece-like textile to ceramics and metal. In this way, the artist plays with security and insecurity. This is another recurring theme in Liebregts’ work. At first it draws you in with its soft shapes and pleasant colors, but then the artist activates the audience by incorporating uncomfortable or alienating imagery. Through her practice, she offers a place for doubt, understanding and creation, where words are replaced by the tangible.
