Settle/Anatomize
This installation was shown at UNFAIR23, Westergas, Amsterdam 2023 and Prospects, Art Rotterdam 2024.
Emotions, stress and trauma can keep a tight grip on your insides. Just as some say love goes through the stomach, grief can completely tangle your gut. The installation Settle/Anatomize (2023) depicts the gut as an emotional storage space: a textile sculpture that is not so much about processing food as it is about storing feelings.
The chosen material, of a fleece-like textile, is very soft while the physical construction is quite angular. In this way, the artist plays with security and false security. This is another recurring theme in Liebregt's work. At first it attracts you by its soft shapes and pleasant colors, but then the artist activates the audience by incorporating uncomfortable or alienating imagery. Thus Liebregts immersively presents the intestinal form as “a physical place where unprocessed emotions and traumas linger.” - Text by Milo Vermeire
